Citation in My Life

The ideas and concepts in this project have been a compilation of personal interpretation, in class lectures and definitions from the Psychology and Life textbook for the Intro to Psychology class. The following is a citation of the textbook, and if you would like to find the source for the pictures I have used, click on them and they will take you directly there.

I hope you have enjoyed citation in my life as well as my Psych in My Life project. Thank you for reading.

Motivation in My Life

Explaining the motivation in my life is pretty simple. I am in the university transfer program to achieve some of my life goals. My goal that can be achieved by completing this program is graduating from Trent University with my degree in psychology as well as teaching. I have personal and internal motivation but I also have lots of external motivation from my loved ones. Most of my motivation is incentive based (being a university graduate and eventually getting a teaching job) but I believe I am also satisfying my hierarchy of needs. Abraham Maslow devised that we have many needs and they need to be fulfilled in a specific order, so he developed the hierarchy of needs. As he stated, each level must be satisfied before we can move to the next. Having money to buy food and drinks fulfills my biological needs, living in a house to physically protect me and not having to fear my for my safety fulfill my safety needs, having friends and family who love me and who I love back fulfill my attachment needs, liking and believing in myself fulfill my esteem needs and having all of these needs fulfilled allow me to live to my full potential, fulfilling my self- actualization needs. All of this combined will help me achieve all my life goals. Completing this project is just getting me one step closer to my goal!

I hope you enjoyed motivation in my life.

Bass in My Life

Being a college student I have had to adapt to conditions I wouldn’t have to deal with at home with my mom and sister. Living with 3 strangers and lots of new neighbors is taking some getting used to. My roommates making noise I can deal with because I can ask them to keep it down and they usually respect my wishes. My neighbors on the other hand, could care less if I wanted peace and quiet. The picture below is how I feel on a regular basis. I’m pretty sure the person who has the bedroom next door from mine has an actual wall of speakers they enjoy using at all hours of the day and night. They used to play their bass at top levels at all times, so strong that it would vibrate into my bedroom. There were complaints not only from me so they stopped for a while. Recently they have been randomly playing a song with very strong bass and it’s very irritating. I have noticed the absolute threshold, the minimum amount of bass I can tolerate before noticing they are playing music is very low. I had developed a sensory adaptation, when you stop noticing an unchanged stimulus, but now that they randomly play music with little to no bass or sometimes lots of bass I am no longer adapted. I’m looking forward to winter break so I can get a break from the bass.

I hope you enjoyed the absolute threshold and sensory adaptation in my life.

Nail Polish in My Life

A couple years ago I started getting really into painting my nails. I joined some groups on Facebook, started a nail blog and bought A LOT of nail polish. This past summer I saw a funny picture on one of the nail blogs I follow and have since been conditioned to do as the picture says. At first I didn’t think about how seeing this picture affected me, until we had our lecture on Classical Conditioning. I then realized that since seeing this picture…it really did happen every time. As you can see the picture posted below says “Fresh coat of nail polish… Now I have to pee” I didn’t really think it was anything more than a coincidence that whenever I was finished painting my nails I would have to pee. Now even the smell of nail polish remover makes me have to pee. Since seeing this picture I have associated wet nails, and now even just the scent of nail polish with having to pee. I would like to try and extinguish this response so I can stop ruining my freshly painted nails trying to go to the washroom, I just don’t know how!

I hope you enjoyed classical conditioning in my life.

Psych in My Life

My name is Caitlin; I am 22 years old and live in Peterborough, Ontario. I have made this blog for a project in my Intro to Psychology class at Fleming College. The purpose of this blog is to demonstrate how I see psychology unfold in my everyday life. Each post will be a true story of an occasion when psychology has been exhibited in my life. I hope you enjoy my stories.
